Dragging tourists away from overcrowded beach resorts, Europe is quickly becoming a hot-spot for vacationers seeking more than just your typical all-inclusive getaway.
With forty-four countries to choose from, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when planning your European vacation. In this article, I highlight five of Europe’s most desirable destinations that are sure to leave you wanting more.
Whether you’re looking to explore a historical city, relax at a romantic retreat or have an action-packed holiday with friends and family, Europe has something to offer for everyone. Not convinced? I assure you that when you are finished reading this article, you will forget all about the free drinks and waterslides of the Caribbean.
5: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Even though this city is most well-known for its openly progressive community, including its notorious Red Light District, there is actually a lot more to it than meets the eye. As a city that was swept up in conflict during the Holocaust, Amsterdam is rich in history. Perhaps the city’s most iconic attraction is the Anne Frank house: offering visitors a look into the life of those who were most vulnerable during the gruesome war that gripped Europe during the mid 1900s. Definitely a must-see!
Looking to spend time outdoors or be active? No problem. What seems like every resident of this city gets around on bicycles: never will you see more bicycles in one place than in Amsterdam. There are even parking garages for bicycles! Take a bike ride along Amsterdam’s famous canals; marvel at the intricate architecture of the buildings and houseboats. Stop for a break at the expansive Vondelpark and enjoy a picnic on one of their large green lawns.
Boat tours are probably the best way to see the city. Over the span of two hours you are able to see the city in its entirety: from quiet residential neighbourhoods to the darkness and mystery of the Red Light District.
Amsterdam is also a hub for shoppers. Browse outdoor markets selling everything from fresh flowers to handmade clothing, or wander one of Amsterdam’s many pedestrian streets lined with boutique stores you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the world.

Beach or poolside, the view is simply stunning!
Visitors are in for the full gastronomical experience while vacationing on the Amalfi Coast. Boasting some of the world’s finest seafood, fish lovers are in for a treat with many restaurants featuring a daily catch of the day special. Not into seafood? The hills are alive with the sound of music! Sound familiar? The city streets and mountain meadows Maria and the Von Trapp daughters strolled in the hit classic film The Sound of Music were in Salzburg.
